Goa Giri Putri Nusa Penida Temple is one of the unique temples in Bali because it has a cave as its trademark. That cave is one of the biggest caves in Nusa Penida.

Located at an altitude of 150 meters above sea level and about 310 meters long, Goa Giri Putri Temple is never empty of visitors. In addition to the people who want to pray, tourists who come both domestic and foreign mostly want to know more about the religious rituals performed and the sacred atmosphere in the cave.

T he name of Giri Putri Cave Temple comes from the word "Giri" which means hill or mountain and the word "Putri" which means woman. In Hinduism, Putri is a symbolic form of divine power. Because this sacred cave is a place to worship of God in the form of goddess manifestations that are caring, protecting and loving humans so that the name Giri Putri is pinned to the name of the cave temple.

The Uniqueness of Giri Putri Cave Temple

Besides as a place to worship, The Hindus believe that the flowing water from the spring source in the Goa Giri Putri Temple contains natural strength that can cure disease. The Hindus often beg for Tirta Pangelukatan (holy water) and brought to go home for the treatment through purification way (melukat).

Because its location is holy and sacred, women who are menstruating are not allowed to enter the cave area. The visitors require to wear sarongs and scarves when entering the cave and must keep their words and behavior.

For reaching the cave. You must first climb 110 stairs to reach the mouth of the cave. Don't think Goa Giri Putri has a wide and big cave mouth. Even to enter the cave requires a struggle because the mouth of the cave is only 80 centimeters wide and squiggly.

Inside the cave, there are stalactites and stalagmites that decorate the entire of cave room, it make the cave be more fantastic. Almost the cave have been fulfilled small lights, but there are also some dark places because it’s used as a place of meditation.

On the end of the cave, there are long chairs (made from the stone) with god statues in the front as a place of worship. This is where religious ceremonies are usually held. After walking about 100 meters, the cave exit is wide and like the entrance.
